Film Opening Analysis

Obsessed

In the film opening of obsessed it begins with an establishing shot of a neighbourhood and a car driving into the drive. The first two characters that appear on the screen are Idris Elba and celebrity Beyonce Knowles who look happy as ever to be arriving at their new home. Much like married couples they have a little boy who they adore. As they explore their new home there are a number of shots used such as wide shot, high angle shot, mid shot and low angle shot which enables the viewer to look at the setting from a number of angles. In the background there is a peaceful song played which relates to the scene being happy and the romantic attraction of the couple. This drama/thriller is set in the day giving us very low lighting within the house which may imply that at night these particular places such as the loft can bring about great danger.

The Dark Knight

In the film opening of ‘The Dark Knight’ there is a constant ticking in the background, which immediately creates suspense and gives you the idea that something is going to happen. In this case, something bad does happen as the camera zooms into the building (from a wide shot of the town) whereby you suddenly here a loud crash of glass – which was smashed by a grapple gun. The mid shot of the man with the gun is seen to be disguised with a clown mask and is in an unknown room within the large building. The last shot of him is an over the shoulder shot and the rooftops of other buildings in the surrounding area. Another over the shoulder shot is used of a man standing with a bag in his hand and the same clown mask – which the camera zooms into. The effect of not identifying the character yet zooming on to the mask creates suspense for the audience because they are going to be left, wanting to know who the main character is but most importantly the central focus of the mask being worn by all these characters. The lighting of the scene is in an outdoor location as well as inside that is fairly bright. In particular scenes, the lighting is however fairly dark and are set in places that the people are not allowed to be in. This may suggest that they are doing something illegal, bad and dangerous.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

In the film opening of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ there is a wide shot of the rain forest and the sounds of animals within it. A Birds eye view shot is used to show the surrounding of the chimpanzees waiting and as the non digetic sounds decrease in volume, there is a sudden sound of the birds above (high angle shot) which creases tension and makes the audience believe something is going to happen next. Suddenly, the humans who were once hiding, charge out of the bushes, trees and plants to try and capture the chimpanzees. This creates a scene of action by which many shots are used, background music is fast and loud and a dolly trolly is used to show movement at a fast pace. As its set out in the open the lighting varies from bright, to fairly dark. Once the chimpanzees are captured and caged there is a close up of one of the animals face to show his emotions and feelings of feeling depressed, scared and upset. Zooming into the chimps face to eventually show a extreme close up of the chimps eyes allows the audiences main focus to be on what is yet to happen. The transition of scenes is shown through the zoom in and out of the chimps eyes making a effective link.

Questionnaire Results

I asked the following questionnaires to members of the public and in return, I was able to find out a range of information from my target audience who were people between the ages of 16 to 25.

From my general information I found out that it was very common to go to the cinema. However, how often they go varies from once a month to "every time a good film comes out". While some people like comedy and action, others like thriller and romance which shows that people between the ages 16-25 are interested in a variety of genres. Due to technology being so advanced, not a lot of people buy films and prefer to watch it online. Although background music and special affects attracted a lot of people to film trailers, there was a vast amount of people who was attracted by the actors and actresses

From my specific questionnaire I found out that there was a balance between people who liked and disliked thriller films. Those who were in favour of them preferred a build up of tension as it made it more interesting rather than getting straight to the point. They also felt that the background music added great effect to the film because it suggested a bad event was going to take place as well as build up tension for the audience. Both mysteries and action was liked by the public.

From my one to one interview I got two opinions from two females who differed slightly in age. Although one did not favour thriller films as much as the other, she still gave us useful information such as liking young actresses and actors being used in films as she could relate to them being young herself, background music adding some effect and actors and background music being two factors that make a film trailer attractive. My next interviewee loved thriller films because of the thrill it created. She also liked a mixture of young and old actors and actresses because it made it more interesting and easy to relate to. Lastly, she felt that special effects and editing added great effect to the film rather than background music.

One to One Interviews

For my one to one interview I asked two people from my target audience a range of detailed questions about thrillers and specific production.

My first person was my friend Chloe who is 17 years of age. Her results are as followed:

1. Yes, once every two months
2. My favourite genre is Comedy because I prefer to be amused then scared.
3. Paranormal Activity 3
4. They are ok if they are not too scary but if they are too scary I will not go and watch it.
5. I would say the actors in it and the background music
6. Younger actors/actresses because you can relate to them
7. I think the background music adds effect but not great effect.
8. I prefer a build up of tension as its gives me more things to look forward to in the film.

My next person to interview was Sam who is 30 years old. Her results are as followed:

1. Yes, every 3 weeks or so.
2. My favourite genre is action as I like to be alert throughout the film. I also like the build up of suspense and tension.
3. The last film I saw was Johnny English.
4. I love thriller films especially, because of the thrill it creates and how adrenaline rushing it is.
5. Everything really, how the plot is portrayed, how the concept is set up etc.
6. I like films with a mixture of young and old actors and actresses becuase it makes it more and interesting and everyone can relate to it.
7. I think the editing and special effects add great effect to the movie as they are amazing at times.
8. I definitely like a build up of tension within a film because a film that gets straight to the point is really boring.

Specific Questionnaire

For my specific questionnaire, I made specific questions based on thriller genre as well as a few questions about my own ideas for my production. This questionnaire was very beneficial  as the questions were specific and in return gave me alot of deatiled answers.

Here is a completed copy of one of my specific questionnaires:

General Questionnaire

For my general questionnaire, I made up a range of questions in order to explore the audience's relationship with films and develop and audience profile. I asked 10 people to fill out my questionnaire which enabled me to get a vast amount of information about different people, with different interest as well as of different ages.

Director Case Study: David Fincher

David Andrew Leo Fincher was born ont he 28th August 1962 in Denver, Colorado. At the age of 18, he worked for John Korty (american film director) at Korty Films in Mill Valley. He then went on to work for Industrial Light and Magic in 1981 for 2 years. After leaving ILM in 1983, Fincher signed with N.Lee Lacy in Hollywood and began to direct TV commercials and music videos.

He's directed TV commercials for clients such as
·      Nike
·      Coca-Cola
·      Budweiser
·      Heineken
·      Pepsi
·      Levi's
·      Converse
·      AT&T
·      Chanel
And directed music videos for Madonna, Sting, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, George Michael and The Wallflowers to name a few. He has been very successful in the following films Se7en (1995) ), Fight Club (1999) and Panic Room (2002).

Se7en

In seven you are immediately welcomed with distorted background music that starts of low and increases in volume. This gives off the impression that the film will be full of mysteries. There is a range of images shown from, photographs, books and files to blades needles and fingers. Overall, the opening sequence looks as if someone is gathering a range of evidence from many different sources to end some up an end result.

Fight Club

The opening sequence to Fight Club is created to build up excitement through the loud music and the special effects. The background colour is black which allows you to focus on the blue writing that contrasts with the background and makes it stand out. The special effects used are very appealing to the eye and makes you think about what the film will actually be about. They appear on screen in a way that makes it look as if they are coming out at you. Despite the title being Fight Club the moving images shown have no relation to fighting. Eventually the camera zooms out to show parts of different objects clearly. For example hairs from a head are shown which is emphasised by only a few hair strands and sweat being shown. The way in which this is done however, allows you to think of what the other various objects could be – which is revealed at the final point whereby you see a close up of a man’s face. He is seen to be sweating (emphasised by it trickling down his face), shivering and has a shocked look on his face which is emphasised by the widening of his eyes which makes the audience wonder what he is actually shocked about. This becomes known to the audience when a man is shown with a gun in his mouth looking extremely frightened and slightly shaking. The gun is __________________ back which builds up even more intensity.

Panic Room

The opening sequence of panic room shows various wide shots of a city with slow transitions and credits. There is a low violin playing as background music, which begins peacefully. However, the audience is made to believe that something is going to happen next by the increase in volume of the orchestra and the repetitive ticking.
